264 East to Pacific Avenue, turn right.  Go 1-1/2 miles to Rudee Inlet Bridge, over bridge and continue for 1/2 mile.  Museum is on right.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center hosts over 800,000 gallons of aquariums and live animal habitats focusing on Virginia’s diverse and unique marine environment. With more than 300 hands-on exhibits, a nature trail, an aviary, two animal touch pools and a 3D IMAX® theater, a visit to the Aquarium can be fun and educational. To complete the experience there are two stores and a café.

PARKING: 6 wheelchair accessible parking spaces located near entrance of both buildings.  Ramp nearby.  

TYPES OF PATHS:  1/3 mile long asphalt path connecting both buildings.  Interior pathways are accessible with no steep grades.

ENTRANCE:  At front of both buildings.  Handrails on left and rt.  Ramps  provided.  37 in. wide glass entry doors easily open out with pull type handles, clearly marked in contrasting color, 34 in. above floor.  

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  Located in main lobby area.  Doors are 35 in. wide, and open in.  Turns must be made to enter.  Accessible stalls have 34 in. wide doors opening in, and handrails.  19 in. toilet seat height, and 13 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height is 34 in.  Pipes are wrapped.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.

ELEVATOR:  Wheelchair accessible elevator with sound indicator, located in main building, main lobby. 

SPECIAL SERVICES:,
For guests with hearing disabilities,there are signing interpreters available with advance notice, and Assistive Listening Systems.

For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits among the 300 interactive exhibits.  Signs with contrasting background, printed on a non-glossy surface.   There is increased wattage lighting in dining and meeting areas.

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 40 in. wide.  Counters 36 in. high.  Clerks assist customers with special needs.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Accepted credit cards MC and V.  Hours of operation:  9-5 with extended summer hours.  Admission fee. One caretaker is admitted at no charge if he or she is working with a guest who is visiting the Aquarium. A caretaker is defined as a required medical attendant without whom the guest could not tour the Aquarium. The disabled guest may request an additional caretaker be admitted at 50% of regular admission. Call 757-437-4949 for information.
