DIRECTIONS: From Richmond and I-64, take the Providence Forge exit (Rte 155), continue 12 miles toward Charles City and Rte 5.  At Rte 5, turn left - proceed 3 miles - Sherwood Forest on right - 14501 John Tyler Highway.  From I-95, follow signs to I-295 South and take exit #22A (Rte 5).  Follow signs to Sherwood Forest along Rte 5.  3 miles east of Co. Courthouse.  From Williamsburg and Hwy. 199, follow signs to Rte 5 West.  Proceed 18 miles, approximately 30 minutes.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Home of John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States.  Currently owned by President Tyler’s grandson and his family.  Longest frame house in America.

The plantation buildings, ca 1680 to 1850, have been in constant use. Nine surviving dependencies supported the operation of the President’s 1,600 acre working plantation and constitute one of the most complete plantation yards in America. A self-guided tour over the 28 acres grounds notes some of the 35 non-native species of trees planted by the former president, including America’s first Ginkgo tree which was a gift from Commodore Matthew C. Perry after President Tyler reopened the Oriental trade routes in the mid-1800s.

PARKING:  20 wheelchair accessible parking spaces down entry lane and to right side.  Parking spaces open.  RV and Buses welcomed.  Front drop off/pickup allowed by automobile only.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Packed dirt and sand with gravel.  Lengths of paths vary.  Paths not easily accessible for persons with mobility disabilities.

ENTRANCE:  Located front, but can accommodate manual wheelchair with side entry  (2 steps - no ramp - assistance available for manual wheelchairs).  4 exterior steps, each 8 in.  1 entry door, 39 in. wide, opens out - opened by staff .

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:   In gift shop to left of house - can enter side double door.  Doors 36 in. wide, open out.  No turns to enter.  Accessible stalls:  36 in. wide doors opening out and handrails.  19 in. toilet seat height, with room for a lateral transfer.  Sink height 32 in.  Wrapped pipes.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Unisex and/or companion assisted rest room available at the public rest room.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
Special guide book for guests with disabilities.
For guests with hearing disabilities, written scripts are available.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES:  Located in gift shop.  Facilities most accessible to wheelchairs located side entrance to gift shop.  Tables for guests in wheelchairs located inside and out.  Table height 29 in.  Aisles between tables 4 ft. wide.  Non smoking areas available.

GIFT SHOP:   Steps to enter.  Aisles 4 ft. wide.  Counters 27 in. high.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Accept cash, check, V and MC.  No refunds.  Admission fees.  AAA and military discounts available.  Hours:  9-5 daily, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. House tours are available by appointment only.
