DIRECTIONS:  Located just 7 miles South of Smithfield’s Historic District on rte. 258 South (Main Street in town).  Adjacent to 1800 Courthouse of Isle of Wight.      

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Named after Francis Boykin, who served as a lieutenant with Patrick Henry and later camped with George Washington at Valley Forge. He donated land for the Isle of Wight Courthouse of 1800. This way his tavern was conveniently located right next door for meals and refreshments needed by court officers and personnel, curious observers and travelers.

Boykin's Tavern

Boykin’s Tavern is located on one of the oldest thoroughfares in Virginia, Route 258, and it provided accommodations during the 18th and 19th centuries when transportation was limited and roadways were marginally functional. Additionally, the tavern, which houses architectural facets that are rare in rural Virginia, played a significant role in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War.

 

PARKING:  1 designated accessible parking spaces, directly adjacent to building.  Accessible aisle 3 ft. wide.  Nearby ramps well marked.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Paved from parking lot.  Paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.  Steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.

ENTRANCE:  At front of building.  6 exterior steps, each 6 in. high.  Handrails on left/right.  Ramps provided.  2 entry doors, 44 in. wide, easily open in with knob handle located 36 in. above floor.  

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  On 1st floor.  Available without steps.  Doors 36 in. wide, open in.  No turns to enter.  Wheelchair accessible stalls and handrails.  18 in. toilet seat height, 16 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 36 in.  Wrapped pipes.  Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with visual disabilities, docents will interpret building.

For guests with hearing disabilities, there are signing interpreters available with advance notice, and written scripts are available.

GIFT SHOP:  One large room - items displayed along 4 walls - no aisles.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Checks and cash only for gift shop.   The first floor only is available for touring.  Free admission.  Open 11a-4p.
