GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The largest children's museum in Virginia. Over 64,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space, featuring dozens of interactive exhibits and a planetarium. Young and old will be fascinated by the antique toy and model train collection, one of the largest on the East Coast. The train collection includes examples from the early 1900s through the present day. The kids will enjoy all kinds of adventures and also learn all kinds of fascinating things here. Hands-on museum which educates children while they experiment with each exhibit.

PARKING:  2 wheelchair accessible parking spaces in city garage behind museum.  Nearby ramps well marked and cannot be blocked by another vehicle.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Concrete paths,  accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.  Length of paths 200’.

ENTRANCE:  Located Middle Street.  3 entry doors, 32 in. wide, easily open out with clearly marked grab bar handles located 32 in. above floor. 

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  1st and 2nd floors.  Doors 32 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter.  Accessible stalls have 36 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails.  17 in. toilet seat height, 12 in. between commode and wall.  Sink height 26 in.  Wrapped pipes.  Stall checked regularly for obstructions.  Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.

ELEVATOR:  1st floor lobby and exhibit area.  Serves all levels.  Control buttons 53 in. high, in braille, and raised.  Audible floor change signal.  Wheelchair lift to Mezzanine.  Staff assistance to unload elevator.  Interior of car is  84 in. by 84 in.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, signing interpreters are available with advance notice.

For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits, interactive museum and signs with contrasting backgrounds, and documents in large print on non-glossy surface. 

For guests with mobility disabilities, there are lowered drinking fountains.

GIFT SHOP:  Aisles 36 in. wide.  Counters 38 & 44 in. high.  Merchandise on wall displays available with assistance. With our selection of classic toys, we carry science and art kits, unique logo items, and a large variety of Thomas and John Deere merchandise.

Manic Monday Laugh, sing, and move to the music and stories to start your week off right! 10:30 am and 3 pm

Transportation Tuesday Get ready to learn about transportation! Activity examples include: taking a spin on our Roller Racer, paper airplane races, train activities and more! 10:30 am and 3 pm

Wacky Wednesday Get moving with a wacky activity on the second floor. The wackiness might include obstacle courses, tossing around the solar system with a parachute or giant floor bowling! 10:30 am and 3 pm

Throwback Thursday Enjoy a blast from the past with an activity of yesteryear. You may find an old time carnival game upstairs or hula hoops and jump ropes! 10:30 am and 3 pm

Get Fit Friday Join us upstairs for a physically fit activity! 10:30 am and 3 pm

STEM Studio Saturday Come by the STEM Studio for activities that are hands-on and appropriate for the entire family to do together. Each week will feature a different activity related to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concept. Studio Hours are 10:30 am - 12:30 pm and 2:30 - 4:30 pm.

Make N Take Saturday Stop by the Make N Take Room for a fun themed craft. Room hours 10 am - Noon and 2 - 4 pm.

Show-stopping Sunday Stop by the art classroom for a show stopping display. Examples include an interactive story time, an exciting educational program or a special guest. 12:30, 2 and 3:30 pm
