Newport News is centrally located on the Virginia Peninsula in Hampton Roads and bounded on the west by the James River and on the south by Hampton Roads Harbor.
Area residents and tourists can enjoy a variety of unique shopping opportunities with three regional malls and numerous neighborhood shopping centers. A mulititude of historical, cultural and leisure-time activities can be found in Newport News, such as The Mariner's Museum that features more than 800 model ships, figureheads and an entire ongoing restoration display of the USS Monitor ironclad battleship of the Civil War.
Other museums include the Virginia Living Museum, which is home to native wildlife, and the Virginia War Museum with the largest collection of war relics in the USA!
The Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News features cultural performances such as the Virginia Symphony and the Virginia Opera. The city also supports an active recreational program at Newport News Park, the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi, offers boating, fishing, camping, biking, hiking, tennis and golf.
Newport News is in close proximity to the "Historic Triangle" of Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.
