I-64 east to exit 264 onto 664 south. Exit at Aberdeen Road (exit 3). Turn left at light onto Aberdeen Road. Turn right - which is 28th street - At light go 2 blocks, right on Oak Avenue - museum on corner of 28th and Oak.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The restored 1899 home of the African-American attorney J. Thomas Newsome and his wife Mary Winfield Newsome. Newsome was a respected attorney, journalist, churchman and civic leader and a member of the postwar Civil War south's new urban African-American middle class. His elegant Queen Anne residence served as the hub of the local black community from which he led the fight for social justice within Virginia.
PARKING: 1 wheelchair accessible parking space, and 1 wheelchair accessible parking space with 96 inch access aisle on Oak Avenue behind museum. Ramp well marked and placed so that it cannot be blocked by another vehicle.
TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION: Sidewalk and wood porch. Paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities. Length of paths 12’ & 78’ to front door.
ENTRANCE: On 28th Street. 5 exterior steps, each 7 in. high. Handrails on left/rt. Ramps provided. 2 entry doors, 48 in. wide, easily open in with door knob located 34 in. above floor. Steps inside lobby beside front desk. Each step 7 1/2 in. high and marked with tactile strip/color change. Handrails.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located left side of house (no stalls). Doors 33 in. wide, open in. Turns to enter. Wheelchair accessible toilet is 19 inches high with room for a lateral transfer. Handrails. Sink height 35 in. Unisex or companion assisted rest rooms available.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES: Available only for meetings.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: No admission fee. Hours: Mon-Sat 10-4.
