I-64  to exit 267.  Go straight through traffic light - Turn left onto Frehall Ave.  Bear left for parking lot.  Come to museum to pick up pass.   

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The Museum is the oldest African American museum in the United States and one of the oldest museums in the state of Virginia. Its holdings feature over 9,000 objects including traditional African, American Indian, Asian & Pacific Island art; African American fine arts; and objects relating to the history of the University. Highlights include an African collection of approximately 3,500 objects, including one of the finest collections of Kuba art in the world and an American Indian collection of over 1,600 objects from more than 93 Native American tribes.

PARKING:  Behind museum.  4 wheelchair accessible parking spaces. Nearby ramps well marked.

TYPES OF PATHS TO OR AROUND ATTRACTION:  Paths accessible to persons with mobility disabilities.  Steep grades may require assistance for persons in wheelchairs.  Length of paths 135 ft.

ENTRANCE:  6 exterior steps.  Ramps provided.  2 entry doors, easily open out with pull handle located 5 in. above floor.  Steps inside lobby, located right and left.  Each step 7 in. high.

PUBLIC REST ROOMS:  Located in the basement.  Doors 36 in. wide, open in.  Turns to enter.  Accessible stalls have 33 in. widedoors opening out, and handrails.  Wheelchair accessible toilet is 19 inches high with room for a lateral transfer.  Sink height 33 in.  Wrapped pipes.  Rest rooms are identified by a raised figure with pants or skirt on door to designate men or women.

ELEVATOR:  Wheelchair accessible elevator with sound indicator  located first floor near door to ramp.  Door width 72 in.  Buttons in braille and raised.  Door stays open 6 seconds.  Interior of car is 93  in. by 105  in.

SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with visual disabilities, there are documents in large print on non-glossy surface.

GIFT SHOP:  Counters 42 in. high.  Aisles clear of temporary displays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  All major credit cards accepted.  No admission fee (donations accepted).  Hours:  Mon-Fri, 8-5, Sat, 12-4.
