DIRECTIONS: I-95, Exit 130A, follow signs to downtown Fredericksburg and Kenmore Plantation.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Historic Kenmore Plantation & Gardens, one of the most elegant Colonial mansions in America, lies in the heart of historic Fredericksburg. It was built by George Washington's sister, Betty, and her husband, Fielding Lewis, a wealthy merchant.
The mansion has recently undegone an extensive 8-year restoration to return it to its 1775 appearance. Visitors marvel at the amazing plasterwork ceilings and the historically accurate colors throughout the house. Tours focus on the lifestyles of the Washingtons and Lewises. Learn how the “stucco man” made the plaster ceilings and how they were restored. Tours also cover the history of some of the previous owners, including the Gordons and Howards.
PARKING: 1 wheelchair accessible parking space.
TYPES OF PATHS: Brick, concrete and mulch with steep grades requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs.
ENTRANCE: The visitor center and museum have a smooth graded ramp/walkway to the reception area. The main house is not wheelchair accessible.
PUBLIC REST ROOMS: Located Crowninshield Museum. Doors are 32 in. wide. Turns to enter. Accessible stalls have 31 in. wide doors opening out, and handrails. 16 in. between commode and wall. Sink height is 30 in. Accessible stall checked regularly for obstructions.
SPECIAL SERVICES:
For guests with hearing disabilities, there are written scripts.
For guests with visual disabilities, there are hands-on exhibits, such as objects available upon request during tours of the mansion, and documents in large print on non-glossy surface.
GIFT SHOP: Not wheelchair accessible. Aisles 26 in. to 67 in. wide. Clerks assist customers with special needs. Aisles clear of temporary displays.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Accepted credit cards: V and MC, Museum Shop only. Admission fee. Kenmore is closed in January and February. 10-5 Mon-Sat, 12-5 Sun, March through October, the last tour is at 4:15. In November and December the last tour is at 3:15.
